Procedurally Generated Lullabies
Playing the right relaxing music at the right time can do a lot for helping you rest, clear your head, or focus. But finding the right music to play can be a bit of work, especially if you’re looking for something soothing to play when you sleep.
Rather than find music to help you relax, you can now just let a computer generate the music for you. That’s the premise of Endel, an app that plays procedurally generated music (it’s music generated by an algorithm) to help you sleep, relax, and focus. Instead of figuring out the perfect playlist, you can have Endel choose a soundscape based on environmental factors like weather, time, and even your heart rate.
I play Endel on a speaker in my bedroom when I sleep to help drown out noise from my neighborhood, but I also use it when I want something to listen to and don’t have an idea for exactly which music to play.
Endel recorded an algorithmic lullaby with Grimes, if you're into unexpected futuristic mashups.
