How to Turn Your Android Phone into The Best Free Step Counter

If you’re interested in tracking your steps, you don’t need to buy a new device. Your Android phone is already equipped to track your steps for free. You just need to install Google’s secret step counter app to get started.

If you have an iPhone, you can turn your iPhone into a free pedometer too.

Android’s Free Pedometer App: GooGle Fit

Google Fit is an app built for Android phones that tracks several fitness metrics, including how many steps you take every day. Google does not preinstall this app on many Android phones, so you have to download it first.

To set up Google Fit:

  • Go to the Google Play store here (or search for Google Fit).

  • Install Google Fit

  • Log into Google Fit using the same account you use to log into your Android Phone.

Thats all you have to do! Google Fit will begin tracking your steps whenever you have your phone with you.

Upgrading your Step Tracking Experience with Pantheon

The Google Fit offers a few features, but is otherwise basic. You can upgrade your experience by using Pantheon.

  1. Pantheon gives you a smart personalized step goal and small challenges to make it easier to hit your step goal every day.

  2. You can also share your fitness accomplishments with gym buddies or friends in a judgement free format.

  3. Set up a team with friends to compete on your wellness activities.

  4. Pantheon works across platforms. So if your friends are on iPhone or use a Fitbit, you can still share activity.

Pantheon works by pulling the step data from Google Fit. After you set up Google Fit, you can install Pantheon from the Google Play Store for free.

Google Fit Features

Google automatically tracks several fitness activities (as long as you have your phone on you). Google Fit is not just a step counter, it’s also a walking tracker, a running tracker, and can track your cycling.

Google Fit provides special metrics around how your exercise is affecting your health using metrics developed with the American Heart Association. The more you move, the more you can increase special metrics called Move Minutes and Heart Points.

Tracking your steps alone is a great way to make sure you’re doing enough physical activity throughout the day. But Google Fit is missing several features that can make step tracking a more fun experience with friends.
